GURU-DISCIPLE RELATIONSHIP

In our learning process on earth, we gradually gain knowledge through our own trial-and-error experiences and by observing the behavior of other people, benefiting from the analysis of their success and mistakes, which allow us to move forward.

There is a time when we seek a deeper understanding. We start asking questions as: Who am I? Is this all that it is, or there is more? What is the purpose of my life?

When our consciousness has evolved enough to receive answers, we start receiving them. The searching process begins, and some books, teachings, persons, situations, etc… may come into our life to help us widen our understanding and satisfy our thirst of knowledge. As the spiritual growth is unfolding, the person is getting every time closer to Truth…to God.

When the yearning is so intense, the internal longing so strong and the desire so sincere…we can have the blessing of getting in touch with an enlightened master, one who has realized the Self: a true guru. The guru will show us the way, dispel our darkness away and take the burdens out of our backs. Through the help of the guru, the effort of the disciple and the grace of God… perfection may be attained and Self Realization may be possible. It may take time but with the necessary effort and perseverance, we will attract God’s grace and the guru’s blessing and eventually we will succeed.

The presence of a real guru is very valuable and uplifting… but also when the guru is no longer in this physical plane of existence, we may be benefited by his or her guidance and teachings. The bound between guru and disciple is much complex and profound that we may imagine… and his or her unconditional help can accompany us during many births, till our final emancipation.

As Yogananda beautifully said: “The guru is the awakened God awakening the sleeping God in the disciple”

According to the cosmic law, the one who is seeking God sincerely, sooner or later will attract his or her guru. A true guru has already found his way to God and can offer us his hand to show us the way to get there too.

There are many features in the Guru-disciple relationship. Most of them are beautifully described in a booklet called “Guru-disciple relationship”, edited by Self Realization Fellowship, which I have summarized from here onwards.

The guru, or a channel designated by him, gives the disciple an initiation or diksha (spiritual baptism), which means the establishment of a bond and a mutual exchange of love and loyalty.

The loyalty to the guru has the purpose of allowing the disciple to remain focused in just one path and deepening his spiritual practice instead of diverting his efforts in countless techniques. The disciple may gather together his attention, effort and concentration one-pointedly in the goal.

Obedience or surrender to the guru is of great importance. Instead of letting the ego dictate our behavior, we better follow the guru’s wisdom, allowing him or her to discipline us, and surrendering our ego-centered will to the divinely attuned will of the guru. Even when occasionally we may not understand his or her instructions or commands, we may remember that God and guru want for us only our highest good: the freedom of God-realization.

In obedience to the guru, the disciple find himself gradually freed from enslaving desires and negative habits and moods, till he finally is able to develop his or her own discrimination. We may always pray to please God and the guru. This is to be done mainly by right behavior, which is only possible if one practices obedience and surrender to the channel of God, which is the guru.

Respect and humility are another two principles that establish the relation between guru and disciple. Respect give rise to reverence and then humility follows. We reverence our guru with respect and devotion, considering Him or Her as an emissary of God. This respectful attitude will help us to develop our devotion and grow spiritually. When we know ourselves as “the Self”, understanding our divine origin, we will also have true respect for ourselves and for others. We will then bow to the One in all, as we are individualized sparks from the flame of Spirit.

When we are able to bow down, internally and externally, to something greater than the ego, a transformation takes place within us and we start developing humility. Humility is the wisdom that acknowledges the Self, a divine quality of the soul, leading us towards God.

The guru helps the disciple to perfect his or her faith.

Faith is the belief in the things “unseen”, that cannot be known by sensory perception. How can we have faith if we do not experiment something that help us to do it? True faith is born out of direct knowledge of the Truth, through personal experience. The guru leads us to this assurance, as he or she is a manifestation of unconditional divine love. This divine love can really be trusted, and out of this assurance, faith appears to be reasonable. God is the only Reality behind this cosmic illusion, which now appears to be so real for our limited senses. Our ego does not allow us to see through the veil of ignorance, but the guru’s eyes of wisdom are always open and he or she can guide us safely through the darkness of Maya (illusion).

The guru is an inspiration for the disciple as he or she inspires the devotee through his or her own example, as the personification of divine attributes and the embodiment of God’s qualities.

Jesus Christ said in wonderful and concise words: “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:16).

In the same way, the guru symbolizes the way, as the example given by him and his teachings; the guru demonstrate the divine laws of Truth and teaches how to apply them through the sadhana (spiritual practice) he gives to his disciples; he offers inspiration to the disciple, so he or she can apply these principles to his life and follow the path that leads to God realization. The teachings of the guru must not be just a philosophy, but a way of life, applied to every aspect of life.

The guru stands as a mirror in front of the devotee, showing him all the personal limitations and weaknesses that obstruct his way to the goal. The guru never dwells upon these faults but shows the way for overcoming them and teaches the disciple to express the opposite good quality.

As a summary, the disciple may learn to follow the example of the guru and practice faithfully the sadhana he gives, impregnating meditation (Raja Yoga) with devotion (Bhakti Yoga) and balancing meditation with right behavior born of knowledge (Jnana Yoga) and right activity (Karma Yoga: God-reminding activity, performed only to please God and serve humanity, without desire for the fruits of action).

Thanks to the omnipresence of a true guru, whether he or she is in physical form or has left this plane of existence, he is always near the disciple who is attuned with him. The guru-disciple relationship is eternal, as the guru’s help to sincere devotees does not end when they leave their bodies, but he acompany and guide them through many births, till their final emancipation in Spirit. This is one of the reasons why it is a great fortune for the disciple to be lead to a true guru, and it can be even greater if the disciple strives faithfully for perfection by true dedication to the guru’s teachings.

Quoting the great Indian poet-saint Kabir:

 It is the mercy of my true guru that has made me know the unknown;

I have learned from him how to walk without feet, to see without eyes, to hear without ears, to drink without mouth, to fly without wings.

I have brought my love and my meditation into the land where there is no sun and moon, nor day and night.

Without eating, I have tasted of the sweetness of nectar; and without water, I have quenched my thirst.

The guru is great beyond words, and great is the fortune of the disciple.”

May all beings be able to express their divine love in the form of a true guru-disciple relationship.

May all of us be able to reach the goal with the help of God and guru.

Closing Prayer in Sanskrit, taught by Amma:

“Om asatoma sadgamaya

tamasoma jyotirgamaya

LA RELACION GURÚ-DISCÍPULO

En nuestro proceso de aprendizaje en la tierra, incrementamos gradualmente el conocimiento a través de nuestras propias experiencias de ensayo y error, así como a través de la observación del comportamiento de otras personas, beneficiándonos del análisis de sus éxitos y fracasos, lo cual nos ayuda a seguir avanzando.
Llega un momento en el cual buscamos una comprensión más profunda. Comenzamos a hacernos preguntas como: ¿Quién soy yo? ¿Es esto todo lo que es, o hay más? ¿Cuál es el propósito de mi vida?
Cuando nuestra conciencia ha evolucionado lo suficiente como para recibir respuestas, comenzamos a recibirlas. El proceso de búsqueda comienza y entramos en contacto con libros, enseñanzas, personas, situaciones, etc. que aparecen en nuestra vida para ayudarnos a ampliar nuestro entendimiento y satisfacer nuestra sed de conocimiento. A medida que se desarrolla el crecimiento espiritual, la persona se acerca cada vez más a la Verdad ... a Dios.
Cuando el anhelo es intenso, fuerte y el deseo sincero ... podemos recibir la bendición de entrar en contacto con un maestro iluminado, un maestro que ha realizado el Ser: un verdadero gurú. El gurú nos mostrará el camino, disipará nuestra oscuridad y eliminará las cargas de nuestras espaldas. Con la ayuda del gurú, el esfuerzo del discípulo y la gracia de Dios ... la perfección puede ser alcanzada y la Realización del Ser puede ser posible. Puede tomar tiempo, pero con el esfuerzo y la perseverancia necesarios, atraeremos la gracia de Dios y la bendición del gurú y eventualmente lo lograremos.

La presencia física de un gurú real es muy valiosa y edificante ... sin embargo, también cuando el gurú ya no está en este plano físico de existencia, podemos ser beneficiados por su orientación y enseñanzas. El vínculo entre el gurú y el discípulo es más complejo y profundo de lo que podemos imaginar ... y su ayuda incondicional puede acompañarnos durante muchos nacimientos, hasta nuestra emancipación final.

Como hermosamente dijo Yogananda: "El gurú es el Dios despierto que despierta al Dios dormido en el discípulo"

De acuerdo con la ley cósmica, quien busca a Dios sinceramente, tarde o temprano atraerá a su gurú. Un verdadero gurú ya ha encontrado su camino hacia Dios y puede ofrecernos su mano para mostrarnos el camino para poder llegar allí también.

Hay muchas características en la relación Gurú-discípulo. La mayoría de ellas están bellamente descritas en un librito llamado "Relación Gurú-discípulo", editado por Self Realization Fellowship, el cual he resumido a continuación.

El gurú, o un canal designado por él, le da al discípulo una iniciación o diksha (bautismo espiritual), lo cual significa el establecimiento de un vínculo y un intercambio mutuo de amor y lealtad.
La lealtad al gurú tiene el propósito de permitir que el discípulo permanezca enfocado en un solo camino y profundice su práctica espiritual en lugar de desviar sus esfuerzos en innumerables técnicas. El discípulo puede así unificar su atención, esfuerzo y concentración de manera unidireccional en la meta.

La obediencia o la rendición al gurú es de gran importancia. En lugar de dejar que el ego dicte nuestro comportamiento, es mejor que sigamos la sabiduría del gurú, permitiéndole disciplinarnos, y entregando nuestra voluntad centrada en el ego a la voluntad divinamente sintonizada del gurú. Incluso cuando de vez en cuando podamos no entender sus instrucciones o órdenes, es importante recordar que Dios y el gurú solo quieren para nosotros nuestro mayor bien: la libertad de la realización de Dios.
En obediencia al gurú, el discípulo se encuentra gradualmente liberado de los deseos esclavizantes y los hábitos y estados de ánimo negativos, hasta que finalmente es capaz de desarrollar su propio discernimiento. Una buena práctica es orar para agradar a Dios y al gurú. La manera principal de hacerlo es mediante un comportamiento correcto, que solo es posible si uno practica la obediencia y se entrega al canal de Dios, que es el gurú.

El respeto y la humildad son otros dos principios que establecen la relación entre el gurú y el discípulo. El respeto da lugar a la reverencia y después llega la humildad. Reverenciamos a nuestro gurú con respeto y devoción, considerándolo como un emisario de Dios. Esta actitud respetuosa nos ayudará a desarrollar nuestra devoción y crecer espiritualmente. Cuando sabemos que nosotros mismos somos "el Ser", y entendemos nuestro origen divino, manifestaremos como consecuencia un verdadero respeto por nosotros mismos y por los demás. Entonces nos inclinaremos ante el Uno que yace en todo, ya que somos chispas individualizadas de la llama del Espíritu.
Cuando somos capaces de inclinarnos, interna y externamente, hacia algo más grande que el ego, se produce una transformación dentro de nosotros y comenzamos a desarrollar la humildad. La humildad es la sabiduría que reconoce al Ser, una cualidad divina del alma, que nos conduce hacia Dios.

El gurú ayuda al discípulo a perfeccionar su fe.
La fe es la creencia en las cosas "invisibles", que no pueden verse ni ser conocidas por la percepción sensorial. ¿Cómo podemos tener fe si no experimentamos algo que nos ayude a hacerlo? La fe verdadera nace del conocimiento directo de la Verdad, a través de la experiencia personal. El gurú nos guía a esta seguridad, ya que él o ella es una manifestación del amor divino incondicional. Este amor divino nos ofrece una verdadera confianza, y de esta seguridad, la fe que surge parece ser algo razonable. Dios es la única Realidad detrás de esta ilusión cósmica, que ahora parece ser tan real para nuestros sentidos limitados. Nuestro ego no nos permite ver a través del velo de la ignorancia, pero los ojos de sabiduría del gurú están siempre abiertos y él o ella pueden guiarnos con seguridad a través de la oscuridad de Maya (ilusión).

El gurú es una inspiración para el discípulo, ya que él o ella le inspira al devoto a través de su propio ejemplo, como la personificación de los atributos divinos y la encarnación de las cualidades de Dios.
Jesucristo dijo en palabras maravillosas y concisas: "Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida" (Juan 14:16).
De la misma manera, el gurú simboliza el camino, como el ejemplo dado por él y sus enseñanzas; el gurú demuestra las leyes divinas de la Verdad y enseña cómo aplicarlas a través de la sadhana (práctica espiritual) que da a sus discípulos; ofrece inspiración al discípulo, para que pueda aplicar estos principios a su vida y seguir así el camino que lleva a la realización de Dios. Las enseñanzas del gurú no deben ser solo una filosofía, sino una forma de vida, aplicada a todos los aspectos de la vida.

El gurú actúa como un espejo situado frente al devoto, mostrándole todas las limitaciones y debilidades personales que obstruyen su camino hacia la meta. El gurú nunca se detiene en estos defectos, sino que muestra el camino para superarlas y le enseña al discípulo a expresar las buenas cualidades opuestas.

Como resumen, el discípulo puede aprender a seguir el ejemplo del gurú y practicar fielmente la sadhana que éste imparte, entremezclando la meditación (Raja Yoga) con la devoción (Bhakti Yoga) y equilibrando la meditación con la conducta correcta nacida del conocimiento (Jnana Yoga) y la actividad correcta (Karma Yoga: práctica de la presencia de Dios, durante la actividad, realizada solo para agradar a Dios y servir a la humanidad, sin deseo por los frutos de la acción).

Gracias a la omnipresencia de un verdadero gurú, ya sea que esté en forma física o haya abandonado este plano de existencia, este siempre está cerca del discípulo que está en sintonía con él. La relación gurú-discípulo es eterna, ya que la ayuda del gurú a los devotos sinceros no termina cuando dejan sus cuerpos, sino que los acompaña y guía a través de muchos nacimientos, hasta su emancipación final en el Espíritu. Esta es una de las razones por las cuales es una gran fortuna para el discípulo ser llevado ante un verdadero gurú, y la bendición puede ser aún mayor si el discípulo lucha fielmente por la perfección mediante la verdadera dedicación a las enseñanzas del gurú.

Citando al santo y gran poeta indio Kabir:

"Es la misericordia de mi verdadero gurú lo que me ha hecho conocer lo desconocido;
He aprendido de él cómo caminar sin pies, ver sin ojos, escuchar sin oídos, beber sin boca, volar sin alas.
He llevado mi amor y mi meditación a la tierra donde no hay sol ni luna, ni día ni noche.
Sin comer, he probado la dulzura del néctar; y sin agua, he apagado mi sed.
El gurú es grandioso más allá de las palabras, y grande es la fortuna del discípulo ".

Que todos los seres puedan expresar su amor divino en la forma de una verdadera relación guru-discípulo.
Que todos podamos alcanzar la meta con la ayuda de Dios y el gurú.
