THE REALITY THAT I AM - LA REALIDAD QUE YO SOY

THE REALITY THAT I AM

How curious is life, how interesting if it is observed with due love and attention, trying to get rid of the labels with which we classify everything as good or bad.
What is really good or bad? If sometimes it turns out that the "good" is so brief that it is barely imperceptible or ends badly ... and in turn what we call "bad" is what promotes change, progress and welcomes the new, the good, again ... and so everything changes continuously in the wonderful dance of life.
An accident, an immobilized leg and an obligatory time of rest, can take you to a place of presence and deep reflection about the existence and the meaning that exists behind our experiences.
I've been reflecting for a few days on the changing moods that sometimes occur to me, wondering why they are so, the need for those ups and downs, seemingly unnecessary and annoying.
In the light of the teachings of Ramana Maharsi, the saint of Arunachala, I am beginning to understand the hidden meaning behind this phenomenon ...
I have begun to think that maybe I am being shown this in such an obvious way so that I realize that I am not those states of mind. And when I speak of realizing, I do not only speak of understanding something intellectually, but of feeling it, experiencing it in my essence. I am experiencing, becoming aware that I am not my mood fluctuations. These states are something changing and dynamic that occurs in the periphery. In reality, I AM the Being that lies deep within me, observing these fluctuations on the surface. I am the unchanging Being that is PRESENT while all this drama unfolds, while all the joys and sorrows, falls and glories follow each other ... The immutable Being that observes the comings and goings of the manifestation of the ego, associated with the personality.
This situation could be compared with the calm and stillness that exists in the depth of the ocean, in contrast to the movement and the change that is experienced on the surface. Thus, moods, emotions and varied feelings are like waves that shake the surface of my life, impermanent waves, that come and go, while at the bottom of the ocean, the great peace of the Being remains immutable.
The main teaching is that I should not identify with this changing state that is not ME, but simply observe it as it happens, being aware that it is something lacking of its own existence.
Meanwhile, keeping awareness of this unreality that happens in my periphery, continue on the path of deepening towards my true SELF, which is inside me waiting to be discovered. Observe also these transitory states and how they influence spiritual practice.
In the same way that negative moods can negatively influence us to concentrate for meditation, also an excess of well-being and euphoria produced by positive emotions can take us out of the meditative state, if our mind takes too much care to remember those states and sensations. We can get too excited about what we feel and then we get out of that state of peace and calm that occurs through meditation. It can also happen that we get so attached to an emotion or positive feeling that we try to hold it very tight ... and that's when we lose it.
Thus, the ideal would be not to be too sorry for the sadness or not to be overjoyed by the joy, not giving too much importance to what happens to us, thus not creating dependencies of any kind.
It is very important to maintain equanimity, calm and inner balance no matter what happens around, and try to apply this maxim to our life and our spiritual practice.

While the waves of emotions and sensations take me to one side and another ... Remember that everything continually changes around me ... and what changes ... It is not me. I AM that which remains in the depths of the ocean, and not on the surface. I AM the observer of everything that happens. Through observation, I can focus on my true Self and try to dive deep into the origin of what I AM in essence. Try to reach that Heart that is the origin of everything, the origin of creation and that is in me. That immutable presence that I AM.

According to Ramana Maharsi:

“The ‘I’ in its purity is experienced in intervals between two states or two thoughts.
If you seek the ego you will find out that it does not exist. That is the way to destroy it.
The direct method of Self-Enquiry rises from the beginning the final question of ‘Who am I?’.
Attention to one´s own Self, which is ever shining as ‘I’, the one undivided and pure reality, is the only raft with which the individual, who is deluded by thinking ‘I am the body’, can cross the ocean of unending births.
Reality is simply the loss of ego. Destroy the ego by searching its identity. Because the ego is no entity it will automatically vanish and reality will shine forth by itself.”

Why pay so much attention to the transient clouds?
Just observe them. They come and go through the changeless sky.
When the clouds of thoughts leave, only the infinity of our sky remains.

GURU-DISCIPLE RELATIONSHIP

In our learning process on earth, we gradually gain knowledge through our own trial-and-error experiences and by observing the behavior of other people, benefiting from the analysis of their success and mistakes, which allow us to move forward.
There is a time when we seek a deeper understanding. We start asking questions as: Who am I? Is this all that it is, or there is more? What is the purpose of my life?
When our consciousness has evolved enough to receive answers, we start receiving them. The searching process begins, and some books, teachings, persons, situations, etc… may come into our life to help us widen our understanding and satisfy our thirst of knowledge. As the spiritual growth is unfolding, the person is getting every time closer to Truth…to God.
When the yearning is so intense, the internal longing so strong and the desire so sincere…we can have the blessing of getting in touch with an enlightened master, one who has realized the Self: a true guru. The guru will show us the way, dispel our darkness away and take the burdens out of our backs. Through the help of the guru, the effort of the disciple and the grace of God… perfection may be attained and Self Realization may be possible. It may take time but with the necessary effort and perseverance, we will attract God’s grace and the guru’s blessing and eventually we will succeed.

The presence of a real guru is very valuable and uplifting… but also when the guru is no longer in this physical plane of existence, we may be benefited by his or her guidance and teachings. The bound between guru and disciple is much complex and profound that we may imagine… and his or her unconditional help can accompany us during many births, till our final emancipation.

As Yogananda beautifully said: “The guru is the awakened God awakening the sleeping God in the disciple”

According to the cosmic law, the one who is seeking God sincerely, sooner or later will attract his or her guru. A true guru has already found his way to God and can offer us his hand to show us the way to get there too.

There are many features in the Guru-disciple relationship. Most of them are beautifully described in a booklet called “Guru-disciple relationship”, edited by Self Realization Fellowship, which I have summarized from here onwards.

The guru, or a channel designated by him, gives the disciple an initiation or diksha (spiritual baptism), which means the establishment of a bond and a mutual exchange of love and loyalty.
The loyalty to the guru has the purpose of allowing the disciple to remain focused in just one path and deepening his spiritual practice instead of diverting his efforts in countless techniques. The disciple may gather together his attention, effort and concentration one-pointedly in the goal.

Obedience or surrender to the guru is of great importance. Instead of letting the ego dictate our behavior, we better follow the guru’s wisdom, allowing him or her to discipline us, and surrendering our ego-centered will to the divinely attuned will of the guru. Even when occasionally we may not understand his or her instructions or commands, we may remember that God and guru want for us only our highest good: the freedom of God-realization.
In obedience to the guru, the disciple find himself gradually freed from enslaving desires and negative habits and moods, till he finally is able to develop his or her own discrimination. We may always pray to please God and the guru. This is to be done mainly by right behavior, which is only possible if one practices obedience and surrender to the channel of God, which is the guru.

Respect and humility are another two principles that establish the relation between guru and disciple. Respect give rise to reverence and then humility follows. We reverence our guru with respect and devotion, considering Him or Her as an emissary of God. This respectful attitude will help us to develop our devotion and grow spiritually. When we know ourselves as “the Self”, understanding our divine origin, we will also have true respect for ourselves and for others. We will then bow to the One in all, as we are individualized sparks from the flame of Spirit.
When we are able to bow down, internally and externally, to something greater than the ego, a transformation takes place within us and we start developing humility. Humility is the wisdom that acknowledges the Self, a divine quality of the soul, leading us towards God.

The guru helps the disciple to perfect his or her faith.
Faith is the belief in the things “unseen”, that cannot be known by sensory perception. How can we have faith if we do not experiment something that help us to do it? True faith is born out of direct knowledge of the Truth, through personal experience. The guru leads us to this assurance, as he or she is a manifestation of unconditional divine love. This divine love can really be trusted, and out of this assurance, faith appears to be reasonable. God is the only Reality behind this cosmic illusion, which now appears to be so real for our limited senses. Our ego does not allow us to see through the veil of ignorance, but the guru’s eyes of wisdom are always open and he or she can guide us safely through the darkness of Maya (illusion).

The guru is an inspiration for the disciple as he or she inspires the devotee through his or her own example, as the personification of divine attributes and the embodiment of God’s qualities.
Jesus Christ said in wonderful and concise words: “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:16).
In the same way, the guru symbolizes the way, as the example given by him and his teachings; the guru demonstrate the divine laws of Truth and teaches how to apply them through the sadhana (spiritual practice) he gives to his disciples; he offers inspiration to the disciple, so he or she can apply these principles to his life and follow the path that leads to God realization. The teachings of the guru must not be just a philosophy, but a way of life, applied to every aspect of life.

The guru stands as a mirror in front of the devotee, showing him all the personal limitations and weaknesses that obstruct his way to the goal. The guru never dwells upon these faults but shows the way for overcoming them and teaches the disciple to express the opposite good quality.

As a summary, the disciple may learn to follow the example of the guru and practice faithfully the sadhana he gives, impregnating meditation (Raja Yoga) with devotion (Bhakti Yoga) and balancing meditation with right behavior born of knowledge (Jnana Yoga) and right activity (Karma Yoga: God-reminding activity, performed only to please God and serve humanity, without desire for the fruits of action).

Thanks to the omnipresence of a true guru, whether he or she is in physical form or has left this plane of existence, he is always near the disciple who is attuned with him. The guru-disciple relationship is eternal, as the guru’s help to sincere devotees does not end when they leave their bodies, but he acompany and guide them through many births, till their final emancipation in Spirit. This is one of the reasons why it is a great fortune for the disciple to be lead to a true guru, and it can be even greater if the disciple strives faithfully for perfection by true dedication to the guru’s teachings.

Quoting the great Indian poet-saint Kabir:

 It is the mercy of my true guru that has made me know the unknown;
I have learned from him how to walk without feet, to see without eyes, to hear without ears, to drink without mouth, to fly without wings.
I have brought my love and my meditation into the land where there is no sun and moon, nor day and night.
Without eating, I have tasted of the sweetness of nectar; and without water, I have quenched my thirst.
The guru is great beyond words, and great is the fortune of the disciple.”

May all beings be able to express their divine love in the form of a true guru-disciple relationship.
May all of us be able to reach the goal with the help of God and guru.

Closing Prayer in Sanskrit, taught by Amma:

“Om asatoma sadgamaya
tamasoma jyotirgamaya
mrityorma amrtamgamaya
om santih santih santih
Om lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu (x3)
Om santih santih santih
Om sri gurubhyo namah
hari om

Om, lead us from untruth to Truth,
from darkness to light,
from death to immortality.
Om peace, peace, peace
Om, may all beings in all the worlds be happy
Om peace peace peace
Om, reverence to the auspicious guru

"Es la misericordia de mi verdadero gurú lo que me ha hecho conocer lo desconocido;

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE GURU - LA IMPORTANCIA DEL GURU

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE GURU (SPIRITUAL MASTER)

Many of us may wonder about the following questions:
Why do we need a guru (spiritual master)?
Are not we able to reach the same goal by ourselves?
Are not we yet whole and divine?
If everything we are looking for is already within us and we are perfect souls coming from the divine and trying to get back to our true home...then...why to depend onto some guru when walking in our spiritual path?

We came here into this world to play our role in creation and learn lessons, which allow us to grow. Through continuous growth, we may ultimately express our true nature and discover our original state of oneness with God.

There are many ways, many paths to reach the same goal, which is Self Realization.  In the different traditions, the same thing is called by different names, meaning the same: Nirvana, Moksha, Kaivalya, liberation, salvation, awakening, illumination, God Communion…
The soul eventually remembers and reunites again with the divine origin that is the source of everything. The soul finally experiments the union of all, Sat-Chit-Ananda, the ever increasing and ever new joy and bliss, once the soul is merged with Spirit, with God.

I do not know for most of you… but for me this seems a great task, the greatest task a human being may face!

We need a teacher to help us learn in school and specially in university.
We need special training and follow up if we are supposed to start a new job.
We need advise and teaching for almost everything we do in our lives…
How, then, will we not need guidance to accomplish the most important spiritual task which is the awakening of our soul?

A true guru is not a mere teacher, but a mahatma, an enlightened soul.
We are asleep in the cosmic dream, in the illusion of Maya. We have forgotten what we are, our divine origin, and we need to remember it by ourselves or ideally be guided by someone who really knows what is talking about, because he or she is been there before… and he or she can show us the way home.

I will give an example that comes to my mind:
When we try to find a place, we have different options: We may search the place on a map, if we have the gift of good orientation. If we are lucky, we will finally find the place, but it may take time. We may ask for directions to local people… with the possibility of a correct answer or the danger of misdirection.
But if we really want to reach the place faster and more efficiently, we may ideally travel with a local guide, who will be with us all the way, showing us everything, and helping us to understand the places, people and traditions, till we reach our final destination.

In the same way, to get to a place, we can choose to go directly or going in circles; we can use a slow transport, or we can get a plane to reach it much faster.

The guru is the guide in our spiritual path, the fastest way, the plane to the goal.

After some time searching and finding, one of the things I have learnt is about the importance of time: Time is a precious gift and there is no time to waste!
This is why it is so important to focus in our goal and find an efficient way to reach it as soon as possible, when we still have time.

“Even if you lose a million dollars, that can be recovered. But if you loose a second, you can never get it back” –Amma

May we all advance diligently towards the goal, enjoying the way and receiving the invaluable guidance of the guru that God has sent for us.

Love

Daya

THE TRUE MEANING OF RENUNTIATION

It is curious that, the more I shift my life and soul towards India, the more I feel close to Jesus, His life and message, and the lives of the true saints and mystics that had been able to live according to His Spirit.

After a recent pilgrimage to the sacred home place of Saint Francis of Assisi in Italy, I have been meditating further in the concept of true renunciation, a really important issue, sometimes being misinterpreted or misunderstood
Saint Francis incarnated the true spirit of renunciation, learning to live by the heart and mastering a life of complete surrender to God, to Jesus. He,through his external poverty and his internal richness, is and has been an inspiring example for all of us.

It is uplifting to know more about these extraordinary human beings who were able to raise themselves above their human hood to a higher divine realm. This divine realm is also available to all of us, here and now, and many saints are yet to come... We only have to learn again how to look at things and know what are our priorities in life
Is God a priority for us? Is the creator, the all-pervading Spirit, the infinite source of all creation a true priority for us?
For God may truly be an inspiring guidance and fulfillment in our lives if we dive deep enough to find Him within ourselves.

Jesus said: “Where your treasure is, there will be your heart also” (Luke 14:33)

Where is your heart? Where is your treasure? Or in other words where are your thoughts, your feelings, your attention directed towards?
Are you focused in the material, transitory pleasures and challenges of life? Or are you shifting your mind more and more towards the divine?
Something inside of you knows that nothing on this earth can give you eternal peace and joy. It may seem fulfilling from time to time, but it lets you down again and again.
Body and material attachment is a burden for the soul.
Your soul searches for something else, something that is living within you, something that you may decide to discover and live by. Why not dedicating our time and efforts to the fulfillment of this divine nature within?

When you truly start to live with Gods ideal in mind, the ideal of renunciation also comes forth immediately. I am not only speaking of external renunciation,  but mainly inner mental renunciation: being able to live in this world of appearances but not being internally attached to persons or objects, not being enslaved by unnecesary material needs. Detachment is the origin of real freedom and the root of total renunciation, and from here we may move more and more towards an ideal and fulfilled life.

Detachment consists in living in this world, but being not of this world. Being able to keep our consciousness and abide in the True Reality, in what really IS, as we move through this apparent reality that surrounds us, without attaching to it, without needing it, without fear… just living and experiencing, with our attention in God.

Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink; no yet for your body, what ye shall put on (Mathew 6:25)

In the words of Yogananda, Consider your body as a part of God and do not emphasize the material consciousness in it. Spiritualize it by tuning your consciousness with God-Consciousness and you will realize that your life is sustained by the Creator
The key here is Faith, Consciousness, Complete surrender to Gods will. As the birds and animals are not worried about their sustention because God will provide.

We may encourage our own faith, make it bigger, feed it through spiritual company, spiritual practices and readings that will lead us to an internal experience and real shifting.
We may remain active in this world, with our goals and objectives, but at the same time being able to remain conscious in every activity, in every thought being able to expand our love, transcend our egotism and surrender the fruits of our actions to God.
Make our love wider, expanding it not only to our family, but to the bigger family of humanity, finding joy in loving and serving others.
Then, through love and detachment, we will be freed from fear, because living  by Gods word, we will have nothing to fear.

Let us all be, as Saint Francis, an incarnation of a divine model of detachment.
Let God be our treasure For where our treasure is our heart will also be.

Love
